Q&A
I'm putting together a business case for my data
project - a clean prior to a migration of databases - how can I back
up my suggestions? Do you have any stats to use in a business case?
We have just the thing. You can find all sorts of
useful stats on our website. A great one is: on average, 10% of
customer records change every year (Royal Mail, 2009).
Where do we start with making our marketing activities
more environmentally-friendly?
PAS 2020:2009 has been launched in response to pressure from the direct
marketing industry to take a more responsible and sustainable approach
to its activities when it comes to the environment. The specification
focuses on establishing a set of environmental objectives. For more

I worry that the data in our CRM system is pretty old
but I want to make sure we're compliant with the Data Protection Act.
What should I do?
Any data held on customers must be accurate and up to date.
Organisations must only retain information as long as it is necessary
in relation to the purposes for which it was originally collected.

What are the key components to consider as part of a
data governance project?
Data governance projects can vary from organisation to organisation.
Therefore, what you look at will be determined by your own business
requirements. However, it can be useful to look at these 4 key areas as a
starting point:
- Data quality - how is data quality monitored?
- Data security - what processes are in place to mitigate associated risks?
- Data compliance - what is the attitude to compliance and are regulations adhered to?
- Business processes and policies - what policies, documentation and training materials are in place?
It's worth looking around the business to see who's best placed to advise on the current situation in each of these areas. You'll then be able to build a better understanding and set a clear action plan of what you'd like to achieve.
