National Gazetteer for Scotland definition
Definition :
The National Gazetteer for Scotland has been collated and managed by the Improvement Service on behalf of all 32 Scottish Local Authorities. Each complied a local gazetteer for their administrative area against a set of common standards and specifications. It can be used as an example of working by consensus to achieve a common goal.
Local Authorities have obligations with regards to planning, building control and street naming and numbering in Scotland. The information they collect is the source of definitive address information as well as providing insight into any change element about land or property.
It therefore provides an accurate, up to date database of land and property data/assets for all Scottish councils and other parts of the public sector. Ultimately, the National Gazetteer for Scotland is the Scottish parallel to NLPG.
The National Gazetteer for Scotland is hosted on the Scottish National Infrastructure and is co-ordinated by the Improvement Service, who also promote its usage across the wider public sector.
A large number of organisations have expressed interest in using the gazetteer, e.g. it is currently used by the Landlord Registration Project run by the Scottish Government and used in all 32 councils in Scotland.
