What's in and what's out of data management in 2012?
Jan 3 2012, 13:47 PM
A new report by the Enterprise Data Management Council has highlighted the movers and shakers of the data management themes, citing the management of big data and transparency among 43 other top scenarios that will become dominant issues for data management in 2012.
Regularity reform dominated 2011 as big data took a hold of the globe, and the same is expected to continue into 2012. Among the top 43 scenarios set to become popular in the data management arena, global legal entity identifiers, evaluating the maturity of the data governance process, governance implementation and strategic data management were all ranked highly.
On the flip side, there were several trends that regulators wanted to see abolished or reformed in the New Year. Disclosure, global location number, data overload and golden copies were all ranked down as important areas of reform, as well as legislative objectives and proprietary identifiers. According to the report, the goal of all regulators is to eliminate systemic opacity and ensure that data is transparent.
'Transparency' and 'disclosure' have been used in contending lists, which may cause confusion among those who see the meanings as synonymous. However, transparency is a far more sophisticated form of disclosure, and is essential in harnessing and understanding big data patterns of the contemporary market. According to the report: 'firms must find ways of managing with the growing volume of data to avoid being overwhelmed by a tsunami of data'.
A data maturity model is, therefore, essential for most modern firms in order to manage big data and comply with regulatory initiatives.
Data maturity should comply with what is 'in' in 2012, such as transparency, financial stability, market surveillance, capability measurement, links and relationships; and move to eradicate or amend what is 'out', such as disclosure, systemic risk, market abuse, and data overload.
