Tories 'would make more NHS data available'
Apr 15 2010, 11:20 AM
Data quality in the NHS is an issue that will be addressed if the Conservative Party comes to power.
That is according to Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, who told the Guardian patients need access to more information.
He criticised the NHS for being too "secretive", explaining that while it collects a vast amount of data it is not communicating it to the public in an accessible way.
"Our interaction as patients with the NHS should be on the basis that there's a presumption that all information is shared with us," said Mr Lansley.
Steps proposed by the Tories include routinely telling people how successful particular types of surgery are at a hospital, how many staff would be happy being treated there and rates of readmission.
It is hoped these details and others would help patients decide where to go for treatment.
Last month, the party revealed that it would legislate to ensure the public has the right to view government data, should it win the general election.
