Theft of government laptop 'highlights lax security'
Dec 17 2009, 11:02 AM
The recent revelation by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that it is investigating the theft of a laptop - as well as the key used to decode the data - raises serious issues about security practices, it has been suggested.
Speaking to Publictechnology.net, Sean Glynn of Credant Technologies commented: "It's one thing to have excellent encryption on a laptop, but it's entirely another to have the security key - presumably a USB stick or similar - located along with the machine."
There is little or no point having an encryption key when it is stored beside the machine it is designed to protect, he explained.
Mr Glynn added that he is "gobsmacked" by the situation and claimed it is the worst lapse of security since two child benefit disks went missing in 2007.
A spokesperson for the MoD confirmed earlier this week that an investigation into the matter is currently underway.
