Survey indicates Londoners most at risk from identity fraud
Jul 3 2009, 12:27 PM
London is the worst affected city in the UK when it comes to identity fraud, new research has revealed.
The fraud prevention service Cifas recently carried out a survey of UK postcodes and found that identity fraud is particularly concentrated in Greater London.
Only three postcodes in the top 30 of those most affected by identity fraud are outside the capital city.
Cifas Research Manager Sandra Peaston commented: "London is a city of dense population where material wealth and disadvantage can be found in close proximity. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that the most active fraud hotspots should be centred around the London area."
She added that the fact that 27 out of 30 of the postcodes where identity fraud is most concentrated are in London is indicative of the scale of the problem.
Home Secretary Alan Johnson yesterday explained to the Guardian why he thought ID cards were necessary to stamp out identity fraud.
