Socitm announces best practice guidelines for public sector data handlers
Nov 19 2008, 10:11 AM
IT directors within the public sector at the Society of IT Management (Socitm) have joined forces with the Local Government Association to draw up guidelines to ensure best practice in the field of database management.
Entitled the Local Government Data Handling Guidelines, the publication outlines action points and showcases case studies of best practice in data handling scenarios.
The Information Commissioner's Office has also endorsed the initiative and stated that the appropriate handling of sensitive personal data was vital within the public sector.
Richard Steel, president of Socitm and chief information officer at Newham, commented: "It's a long time since data security could be considered as something for just the IT department to worry about. It's a concern that should run through the entire organisation."
He added that in order to ensure an effective data strategy the public sector must implement appropriate procedures and set up systems to safeguard data from security breaches and loss in order to win public confidence.
Socitm was set up in 1986 to regulate best practice among IT workers within the public sector.
The organisation has 1900 members drawn from 98% of local authorities within the UK.
