Social networking users 'must take security seriously'
Jul 29 2010, 12:41 PM
People should be just as cautious when using social networking sites as they are with their email accounts.
This is according to Rik Ferguson, Senior Security Advisor at Trend Micro, who pointed out that it can be easy for criminals to take over a person's profile and attempt to scam money out of family and friends.
He noted that many users are now setting their profiles to private and only making friends with people that they know.
"Hopefully people are moving more towards that 'trust nobody' point of view, which is pretty much where we've ended up with email," Mr Ferguson added.
A recent report published by security solutions provider Norman revealed that cyber criminals are increasingly using sites such as Facebook and Twitter to spread mechanisms for malware.
This can lead to log-in details being revealed and fake messages being distributed to social networking friends.
