Scottish police propose special department to combat identity fraud

Feb 9 2009, 10:06 AM

Plans are being considered to create a dedicated fraud team in Scotland to combat the rise in serious crime such as identity fraud.

The new data strategy is being put forward by Scottish police officers and has the backing of ministers, reports the Herald.

Exact details of the nature of the new fraud office are currently being developed by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos).

It is thought that Scottish police forces are pushing to continue handling fraud cases in their area with only the most serious and complex cases being referred.

Detective superintendent David Leach of Strathclyde Police is thought to be heading up a working committee that will compile a report on the structure of the group.

Credit card and identity fraud has sky-rocketed in recent years and it is thought that £330 is lost due to fraud for every child and adult in Scotland.

Acpos is comprised of all eight Scottish police forces as well as the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency, Scotland's assistant chief constable of the British Transport Police and the Scottish Police College.
