Report claims 'serious errors' in NHS patient database
Mar 19 2010, 12:04 PM
The new NHS central patient database contains mistakes that could risk lives, according to a report.
An article on the Computer Weekly website claims research by University College London uncovered oversights and inaccuracies within the Summary Care Record, although they found no evidence that any patients had yet come to harm as a result.
British Medical Association (BMA) Head of Science and Ethics Vivienne Nathanson told the Times: "These are clearly serious concerns and suspending the roll-out of the programme would allow time for them to be addressed."
So far an estimated 1.2 million patient records have been created and uploaded on to the system with the Times reporting that a further 12 million leaflets have been sent to UK homes to inform people about the technology.
This news follows comments from the BMA last week that work on the database was progressing "at breakneck speed" and that patients needed to be made aware of their right to opt out.
