Reduce costs 'by cutting valueless data'
Jul 23 2010, 11:54 AM
The majority of organisations hoard a considerable amount of valueless data.
This is according to industry commentator Dylan Jones, who noted that in most cases, at least half of the information is of "limited value and could be cut from the target system".
Writing for Data Quality Pro, he said this is typically leads to "cost savings as every item of data incurs modelling, data quality, data mapping, transfer coding and extensive validation".
Mr Jones said there are a number of reasons why data volumes can grow excessively, including system silos leading to the replication of corporate information and the extra data generated through mergers and acquisitions.
He added that the impacts of this growth include increased staffing costs, additional cooling expenses and reduced query performance.
Writing for Marketing Week earlier this month, Kevin Slatter, Managing Director of G2 Data Dynamics, said businesses should go for quality over quantity when collecting customer data.
