RCHT 'reaps benefits' of data management changes

The benefits of making improvements to data management have been highlighted by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trusts (RCHT).

According to the body, one of the major advantages of the recent changes introduced to its IT systems is a reduction in the amount of time staff need to spend completing administrative tasks.

It revealed that it receives around 600,000 visits annually from patients and through introducing new software has discovered it is possible for medical records and patient data to be processed 40 per cent faster than previously.

Before the roll out of data deduplication technology it stated that around 20 hours were spent each week handling the 40 terabytes of data it holds, something that has now been reduced to around five hours.

This may prompt other organisations to look at the potential benefits data enhancement could hold for them, which may produce financial as well as time savings in the long term.

Commenting on the improved efficiencies, the RCHT's backup and recovery specialist engineer Andi Patrick stated that it is likely to be able to reap the benefits of being able to achieve more than it "thought was possible" as data can be pinpointed "faster and easier".

"I no longer have to clear budget hurdles and perform in-depth cost analysis before adding a new capability, which enables me to respond so much faster and more efficiently to new business requirements," he said.

Mr Patrick added the decision has allowed it to "move beyond just protecting data to truly managing it for greater business benefit".

Data management improvements may also be ahead for the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, as it recently revealed via the Official Journal of the European Union that it is willing to spend between £5 million and £20 million on its communications systems and services linked to them.  ADNFCR-794-ID-800742519-ADNFCR
