New statistics showing public wariness over the security of their personal information have served to once again highlight the importance of data authentication systems.

A recent poll carried out by VersiSign found that 57 per cent of Britons feel that UK-based companies cannot be fully trusted to keep sensitive information secure, one of the highest levels of apprehension in the whole of Europe.

In Germany, 50 per cent of people expressed their wariness over the abilities of corporations to keep data secure, while in Sweden, France and Denmark the levels were 31 per cent, 27 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Commenting on the findings, Jon Kerr, SSL manager at VeriSign UK, the company which commissioned the study, said: "As online transactions increase, we need to acknowledge the importance of both technology and consumer behaviour in protecting personal details and monetary assets online."

Significantly, the study also found a correlation between how secure web users feel and how willing they are to log on and part with personal information.

In Denmark, 80 per cent of web users log on to websites where they share personal information at least once a week, while this figure stands at just 65 per cent in the UK.
