Psychologist tackles phishing
Oct 13 2008, 10:42 AM
A psychologist is using her background in human behaviour to prevent people falling for ID authentication fraud, or phishing attacks, after she became the victim of a phishing scam herself.
When the identity verification fraud struck in 2004 Shira Rubinoff was inspired to design an ID authentication product using a visual cue on a log-in page that is unique to every site user, prompting them to notice if their was anything amiss, reports ComputerworldUK.
The cue is generated using a mathematical formula based on the user ID and produces a coloured box and a short word that, after extensive research and experimentation Ms Rubinoff found was the most effective way in which individuals memorise and retain information.
Ms Rubinoff told Computerworld UK: "This approach deals specifically with the humanistic factors of technology. I think other technology out there look for technology problems. They forget there is a person sitting behind the computer that is very easily manipulated."
Shira Rubinoff was recently named a recipient of the 'Women of Influence' awards by CSO magazine.
