Poor airflow 'can cause difficulties for data centres'
Nov 27 2009, 11:32 AM
A recent report published by Gartner revealed that data centre managers are likely to face several issues over the coming year, including rising energy costs and ageing hardware.
Responding to the publication, James Cole, Director of data centre manufacturer Keysource Ltd, said that getting airlflow management right is vital.
"Ideally, you want separation between the exhaust airs coming from the rear of the servers and the general data centre air. That is the main enabler to efficiency having a separation between the separate airs," he commented.
Mr Cole noted that other traits of poor data centres include incorrectly located servers and bad cable management.
It is important for data centre managers to have a "joined-up" approach between IT efficiency measures and physical infrastructure, he added.
The report from Gartner recommended that companies consider consolidating data centre sites and take out any systems that are old or under-utilised.
