People 'must be educated about online fraud'
Jul 13 2010, 16:04 PM
Internet users should be taught how to safeguard and protect themselves from online fraud.
This is according to Tony Neate, Managing Director of UK internet security awareness organisation getsafeonline.org, who said it is important that people know what the latest scams are.
"There's no one thing to blame and there's no organisation or individual to blame, we've all got to work together. It has got to be a joint responsibility to educate people for people," he commented.
Users need to know the risks associated with disclosing too much information on social networking sites and how to deal with issues such as phishing.
A recent study carried out by Action Fraud revealed that £3.5 billion is lost by Britons through fraud every year.
Some of the most common types include online shopping and auction fraud, advance fee frauds such as loan and psychic scams, as well as online dating scams.
