Organisations 'must be consistent with data'
Jun 11 2010, 11:56 AM
It is important that businesses are consistent with their data and make an effort to avoid duplication.
This is according to Tom Wickham-Jones, Director of Kernel Technology at Wolfram Research, who noted that problems can arise within large companies when there is a lack of communication between departments.
Speaking at the London Computational Knowledge Summit earlier this week, he pointed out that a consumer can go into a bank, sign up for one product and then be bombarded with information from another section of the same organisation because they do not know you are an existing customer.
"There's merging and demerging of organisations. And, of course, lots of security issues," Mr Wickham-Jones added.
In related news, the Information Commissioner's Office recently compiled some tips for companies looking to improve their data management practices.
Automated mail systems should be checked regularly and dip sampling carried out to ensure that letters are reaching their intended recipients.
