Online shopping can lead to an increased incident of identity verification fraud
Nov 17 2008, 10:42 AM
Identity verification fraud is affecting increasing numbers of consumers, reports the Daily Mail.
More consumers are using the internet to shop online, and are therefore leaving themselves increasingly vulnerable to identity verification fraud.
With 100,000 consumers affected every year and online banking fraud tripling in the past year, John Newbould's story is far from unique.
It wasn't until his bank contacted him to let him know his account had been debited at the same time in different parts of the UK that he realised his identity had been stolen.
Now he is far more cautious, he tells the newspaper: "I'm definitely much more careful with my card and personal details now."
He added that he only visits websites he completely trusts and only makes payments using PayPal.
PayPal is a secure method of performing online transactions and was set up in the format it resembles today in March 2000.
In October 2002 PayPal was bought by eBay for $1.5 billion (£1 billion).
