Online banking customers warned of fraud threat
- Jul 25 2008, 17:03 PM
Online banking users are being urged to act with caution as figures show that the number of hoax emails aimed at retrieving users' data rose significantly in the first half of 2008.
The number of such emails, referred to as 'phishing' emails, more than doubled in the six months up to June 2008 when compared to the same period in 2007, it has been found.
Figures from the UK payments association Apacs show that 20,682 phishing emails were sent in the first half of 2008, compared with just 7,224 a year beforehand.
Sandra Quinn at Apacs said: "We strongly urge banking customers to make sure they remain wary of online scams such as unsolicited emails claiming to be from their bank, and to only use a fully protected PC with regularly updated anti-virus software and a firewall installed and switched on."
Businesses are not immune to the work of fraudsters, and attempts to retrieve information unlawfully from companies are often discovered.
Information such as client and consumer addresses, contact details and dates of birth are highly sensitive, and businesses must be confident in their ability to protect such information at all times.
