NZ postcode overhaul sparks database cleansing
Nov 13 2006, 10:47 AM
A major overhaul of the New Zealand post code system has led a number of organisations to adopt QAS solutions to convert their customer databases.
New Zealand Post recently introduced a new four-digit postcode system, threatening havoc for thousands of organisations who need to update their address databases to incorporate the new postcodes.
Working together with NZ Post which now covers 1,850 postcodes with 10,000 locations each, the QAS contract will see it access the mail delivery service's Postal Address File, a massive database containing 1.8 million addresses.
QAS will also assist local organisations in updating their customer databases to include the new four-digit postcodes, which were introduced in June of this year, by cleansing and matching addresses in the database to make sure they are accurate and comply with data regulations.
"With the new postcode system now in place, QAS will work with companies to help get them up-to-date on the new system and reduce the instances of misdirected mail caused by incorrect addressing and duplicate or similar street names," Nick Brown, data business relationship manager for NZ Post, told New Zealand's Image & Data Manager magazine.
Glenn Parker of QAS Asia Pacific explained how wrongly addressed mail could cause a costly headache for companies.
"For financial institutions, for example, simple things like incorrect addresses can lend themselves to fraudulent activities and money laundering," he said.
"Returned mail costs businesses thousands of dollars each year, let alone the loss of potential business."
New Zealand firms are expected to make particular use of QAS's data capture tool, QuickAddress Pro, enabling them to enter data accurately in ten keystrokes or less.
