NHS urged by technology body to implement IT data strategy
Aug 14 2009, 14:43 PM
The trade body for the IT sector has called on the government to improve best practice in rolling out a technological data strategy for the NHS.
Intellect made the comments in response to the publication of an independent review commissioned by Shadow Health Minister Stephen O'Brien and chaired by Dr Glyn Hayes.
It advocated a data strategy that uses technological innovation for the benefit of the single citizen view.
Melissa Frewin, head of healthcare at Intellect, commented: "There's no escaping the fact that technology has a vital role to play in the provision of 21st century health and social care services.
"The delivery of information systems should not be driven by political timescales and that the focus needs to be on delivering long-term improvements to patient care."
She added that an IT data strategy that improves best practice for the benefit of the single citizen view is the objective of the initiative.
Intellect represents over 750 companies ranging from SMEs to multinationals and 85 of those members make up the Health & Social Care Group.
