NHS data quality improvements 'to drive up clinical standards'
Mar 21 2011, 09:53 AM
Data quality has a key role to play in the operation of the NHS.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley noted that asking the health service to publish more useful information is a vital part of the government's modernisation plans for the organisation, reports the Press Association.
Mr Lansley said many more areas of the NHS can use data to improve patient outcomes following improvements being recorded in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
"Over the next year, we'll make another £1.2 million available for more clinical audits to provide more data to help us drive up clinical standards," he added.
A report by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (SCTS) showed fatality rates had dropped by more than 50 per cent in recent years thanks to data being collected, analysed and used to provide feedback.
According to the SCTS, it is currently the only surgical or medical speciality body in the UK to have comprehensive information on activity and outcomes in its area of operation.
