New online NHS data strategy
- Nov 14 2008, 12:17 PM
The NHS is unifying its online presence to create a one-stop digital service as part of a new data strategy.
Many people trawl the internet when faced with a healthcare issue and now they will be able to refer to www.nhs.co.uk for the answer to any aspect of their condition or treatment on the NHS.
NHS Direct and NHS Choices have merged to form the site which rates hospitals, offers self-help information and diagnoses symptoms to provide the general public with a single customer view of healthcare.
Health minister Ben Bradshaw commented: "By putting all our online health information on http://www.nhs.uk, the public will be able to easily find out the most suitable health options for them, from where to have their treatment to the best ways of keeping fit and healthy."
He added that patients would now only need to visit one site to answer any of their healthcare queries and could rest assured that the information would be up-to-date, accurate and trustworthy.
NHS Direct was set up in 1997 to provide 24 hour advice and information on medical issues.
Staffed by nurses, the telephone advice data strategy went online in 1999.
