New household survey raises data quality concerns in Canada
Jul 28 2010, 11:10 AM
The Canadian government's data quality could be harmed by its recent decision to abolish the mandatory long-form census in favour of a voluntary survey, experts believe.
Alison Brooks, Director of Public Sector Research at IDC Canada, told ITWorld Canada that the voluntary nature of the new national survey is likely to introduce an unpredictable element of bias into collected data.
"You have a proclivity to answer the survey depending on whether you are keen on the government or not," she explained.
Ms Brooks added that public sector organisations and private companies that rely on the census data are concerned by the move, which was announced last month.
She said the government's pledge to send the survey out to 60% more households as a way of compensating for the change is unlikely to help the situation.
The long-form census was axed due to privacy concerns, with critics claiming it forced Canadians to disclose highly sensitive information that could be misused.
