New data breach law 'to be rolled out'
Jul 20 2010, 16:04 PM
New legislation forcing organisations to disclose data security breaches is expected to be introduced within the next four years.
According to Silicon.com, lawyers at the firm Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW) believe legislation requiring companies to notify the individuals involved – as well as relevant authorities - will be rolled out across Europe.
"All of the European data protection regulators have made very strong calls for this mandatory breach notification," said Eduardo Ustaran, Head of Privacy and Information at FFW.
Proposed changes to the EU Data Protection Directive are likely to be published by the European Commission (EC) in November and made law by 2014, the website noted.
The EC published a Digital Agenda document earlier this year, setting out its legislation and policy aims for the next ten years.
"We must put the interests of Europe's citizens and businesses at the forefront of the digital revolution," said Neelie Kroes, a spokesperson for the body.
