National ID card scheme 'moves to London'
Feb 2 2010, 12:13 PM
After being launched in Manchester earlier this year, national identity cards will soon be available to young people in London, it has been revealed.
It was announced this week that people living in the capital aged between 16 and 24 can apply for the document from February 8th.
Home Office Minister Meg Hillier said the cards are extremely useful and can be used for opening bank accounts and purchasing age-restricted products.
"With tough new legislation being put in place clamping down on underage drinking, it will be more important than ever for young people to have access to a universally accepted proof of age," she added.
The cards currently cost £30 and can also be used for travel within the EU.
Speaking last year, Home Secretary Alan Johnson said they are a convenient alternative to a passport and can be stored easily in a wallet.
They are expected to be available nationally from 2012.
