National equine data strategy to be launched
Nov 17 2008, 10:26 AM
A National equine database is due to be launched on November 24th as part of a new data strategy, reports Horse and Hound magazine.
The result of a partnership between Defra and the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), the database has been four years in development and will enable horse owners to get in touch as part of a contact data strategy to initiate breeding programmes.
Identification details of all horses throughout the UK will be held on the archive, thought to number 1.2 million, as well as information relating to the pedigree and competition history of a horse.
The data strategy is designed to promote breeding and although anyone can access the database to look up a horse for free, further enquiries into the pedigree of a horse will carry a fee.
Chief executive Nick Wallbridge told the magazine: "We believe we have about 960,000 current records on the system."
He added that the launch would be relatively low-key in an attempt to get the database up-and-running and smooth out any potential glitches.
The British Equestrian Federation was set up in 1972 to serve the interests of horse sports in the UK via a network of 16 member organisations encompassing 4.2 million horse enthusiasts.
