National Audit Office calls on government to reassess data strategy
Dec 24 2008, 09:41 AM
A new report from the National Audit Office has called on the government to ensure it is implementing an efficient and cost-effective data strategy.
It has found that between £160 million and £290 million a year could be saved by the public sector if it better manages its IT security and cleaning.
Database management is a thorny issue for the public sector with recent breaches in identity verification data causing much concern among the general public.
Edward Leigh MP, chairman of the House of Commons committee of public accounts, commented: "Despite the huge amount of cash lavished on these services, government departments do not take the process anywhere near as seriously as they should."
He added that although billions of pounds was being spent on IT database management services, often the IT professionals hired to oversee a data strategy lacked the relevant skills.
The National Audit Office audits the processes and systems of public bodies to assess efficiency and appropriate use of public money.
