Master data management tips from the expert
May 22 2009, 12:13 PM
An expert in master data management (MDM) has outlined a series of recommendations to help businesses get the most out of their data strategy.
Writing in b-eye-network, author of Master Data Management, Enterprise Knowledge Management - The Data Quality Approach and Business Intelligence - The Savvy Manager's Guide David Loshin urges IT practitioners to check for a few simple issues when implementing the data strategy.
Identifying the areas of business that would benefit from MDM and how critical they are is one factor.
Of the business processes that are anticipated to be improved by MDM, Mr Loshin questioned whether employees are sufficiently trained and aware of the performance expectations involved.
Setting out a realistic time-frame and taking into account the need for staff retraining, potential incentives and awareness among workers and management of the value of the MDM were also highlighted by Mr Loshin as key to the success of the data strategy.
MDM is a resource that manages the reference data held by an organisation and takes responsibility for the data quality of the information as well as ensuring it is securely accessible.
