Make life difficult for identity fraudsters, say police

People should take steps to ensure they are not easy targets for identity fraudsters, it has been claimed.
Speaking to Durhamregion.com, Detective Brett McCagherty said that although it is impossible to prevent identity theft completely, there are steps that individuals can take to protect themselves.
"The best way to prevent it is to be proactive," he commented.
Durham Region Police Services held a special event in Whitby last week, inviting local residents to shred old bank statements and personal documents securely.
Police Superintendant of Administration Bob Chapman said that around 100 people took part in the initiative.
Writing recently for the Daily Telegraph, Rose Murray-West said it is important to act quickly if you are worried that you may have been targeted by fraudsters.
The authorities should be notified at once and your bank should be informed if any of your cards have been stolen, she added
