Law Society urges customers to be aware of identity verification issues
Oct 12 2010, 10:57 AM
Homeowners in the UK have been advised by the Law Society to be wary of identity verification problems, as valuable property can entice fraudsters.
President of the legal institution Linda Lee urged people to listen to the advice of their solicitors when they are dealing with property transactions, since they are trained to help prevent any fraud from taking place.
Her comments are part of a joint initiative being undertaken alongside Land Registry, which aims to cut the number of identity fraud cases occurring.
"Land and buildings are usually the most valuable assets people own. They can be sold and mortgaged to raise money and can therefore be attractive targets for fraudsters," Ms Lee said.
The two organisations have published a joint practice note and two public guides to help people avoid being affected by such activity.
According to the Guardian, people who have been the victim of identity fraud should speak to a solicitor - or the Citizens Advice Bureau - and the police.
