KPMG Forensic's Fraud Barometer reveals record identity fraud in 2008
Feb 3 2009, 11:08 AM
Fraud including identity fraud was recorded at its highest levels during 2008, according to a recent study.
KPMG Forensic's Fraud Barometer revealed yesterday (February 2nd) that over £1 billion of fraud cases were brought before the UK.
These near-record levels are not believed to show the whole picture because many cases carried out after the credit crunch started to bite have yet to be brought to the courts.
Hitesh Patel, fraud investigation partner at KPMG Forensic, commented: "As the global economic downturn takes hold and organisations look ever more closely at their operations it is very likely that more fraud will come to light so that the real impact of the credit crunch on fraud is yet to be fully felt."
He added that in the past twelve months three multi-million pound frauds are alleged to have been uncovered.
KPMG's UK division employs 10,000 staff working from 22 offices across the country.
