Irish fraudsters foiled

- Aug 20 2008, 16:26 PM

After it recently emerged that criminals were tampering with chip and pin machines in the UK to steal credit and debit card details, reports from Ireland are suggesting it may have similar problems.

The Irish Times reports that around 9,000 cards have been 'skimmed' by fraudsters, who will use the information to assume the identity of the cardholder in any transactions they make.

The criminals in this instance posed as chip and pin maintenance staff, before tampering with 47 machines in a number of retail outlets.

The Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation believes that those affected should be safe, as the scam was discovered before the information could be downloaded by the criminals.

"It looks like we've foiled it before the cards were compromised, but it might take a while before we're certain of that," a senior Garda source told the Irish Times.

Cardholders whose details may be compromised have had special sanctions placed on their accounts until the matter is fully resolved, meaning that they will have a small limit placed on how much they can spend in a 48 hour period.

Retailers should be just as aware as consumers in terms of card fraud and should seek the most effective means of ruling it out.
