IPS moves to prevent identity fraud following data breach
Mar 1 2011, 09:43 AM
The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) has taken steps to lower the possibility of identity fraud taking place following a breach of the Data Protection Act.
Passport renewal applications from 21 individuals were lost by the body, prompting an investigation by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
While no complaints were received and no identity fraud issues discovered, the IPS has moved to prevent such an incident occurring in the future.
Staff at the organisation are to be given training on how to follow its policies on the storage and use of personal data and IT security, while regular inspections of the methods used to process information are also to be introduced.
Audits will be undertaken by an appointed data processor as part of the new strategy.
According to recent research included in the CIFAS Staff Fraud Database, there are more than 100,000 cases of identity fraud per year in this country.
