Internet users 'need to stay aware of online scams'
Jul 30 2010, 13:33 PM
It is important that internet users are aware of the latest online scams and viruses in order to protect themselves against identity theft.
This is according to Tony Neate, Managing Director of getsafeonline.org, who said it is important that people are educated in this area.
"For a number of years I was talking about protecting the PC, making sure that you have adequate anti-virus, anti-spyware and updating the operating system.
That's still very important and people need to do that but people also need to safeguard and protect themselves," he commented.
People need to know how much information to share about themselves on social networking sites and what the term phishing means, Mr Neate noted.
He added that organisations and individuals need to work together in order to reduce the number of people being targeted by online fraudsters.
According to the National Fraud Authority, £3.5 billion is lost by individuals to fraud every year in the UK.
