Internet users 'must secure their email'
Apr 23 2010, 11:41 AM
Many people have the same username and password for various email accounts and social networking sites, putting them at risk of having their personal details stolen.
This is according to Con Mallon, Head of Product Marketing for Norton products at Symantec, who noted that once a hacker has one set of details, they can then log on to multiple sites.
"A lot of users have a track record of their activity and they'll have receipts and details of sites they've brought things from. They'll have their CV. They'll have credentials of information," he explained.
Instead of using your email account as a receptacle to hold information, people should have a dedicated password-protected computer, Mr Mallon added.
A recent study carried out by Symantec revealed that in 2009, spam accounted for 88 per cent of all web traffic.
The most common malicious emails were related to goods and services, the report revealed.
