Identity verification cards are positive for employers, says home secretary
- Nov 27 2008, 09:39 AM
Home secretary Jacqui Smith, writing in the Daily Telegraph, said that identity verification cards will strengthen UK borders.
She urged the UK public and business community to get behind the ID authentication scheme, saying that it is a positive move for employers.
Non-EU foreign nationals who enter the UK with the intention to stay for more than six months will carry the identity verification cards.
The home secretary said this will serve to reassure employers that an individual is legally entitled to live and work in Britain.
Ms Smith wrote in the national newspaper: "The National Identity Scheme will deliver a secure and simple proof of ID for all those legally entitled to live and work in the UK - and the majority of people say they welcome identity cards and the benefits they will bring."
Identity verification cards which use biometric ID authentication data will be offered to UK nationals on a voluntary basis from 2009 and are expected to be in widespread use by 2012.
