Identity fraud up 14%, says survey

Identity Fraud

Identity verification services may enjoy a surge in demand after a new report revealed a significant increase in ID fraud.

According to the UK fraud prevention service CIFAS, incidents of this criminal activity went up by 14% in the first half of the year, compared with the corresponding period of 2009.

Richard Hurley, Communications Manager at the organisation, noted that identity fraud levels continue to increase despite widespread awareness of the problem and heightened media attention.

"There is no doubt that the phrase 'identity fraud' is commonly understood and appreciated in today's world," he commented.

CIFAS recorded 50,199 victims of identity impersonation in the first six months of 2010, representing an increase of 22% on the same period last year.

"In a landscape where overall fraud levels appear to have decreased slightly - there remains a high level of fraud, particularly identity fraud, taking place," added CIFAS Chief Executive Peter Hurst.

The increased awareness of such crimes has been demonstrated by the recent launch of Identity, a new ITV drama about detectives investigating identity theft.
