Identity fraud 'linked to unscrupulous staff members'
Feb 15 2011, 09:40 AM
Identity fraud problems may be being caused by unscrupulous members of staff at some companies, it has been warned.
According to the CIFAS Staff Fraud Database, there was a 62.5 per cent increase in employees unlawfully disclosing or obtaining personal data in 2010 compared to the previous year.
CIFAS Staff Fraud Adviser Arjun Medhi said this is a concerning trend, particularly as serious criminals know the value of such information and want to get hold of it.
"With cases of identity fraud numbering over 100,000 per year - our very real concern is that this increase in staff stealing personal data is directly linked to the subsequent crime of identity fraud and identity theft," the official stated.
According to the Stop ID Fraud website, 82 per cent of British people do not believe their company takes the threat of such crimes occurring at their organisation seriously enough.
A total of 94 per cent feel at personal risk of being a victim of identity fraud.
