ID card prototype contract awarded
Aug 5 2008, 17:42 PM
The prospect of a biometric ID card system in the UK has taken another step towards becoming reality after French defence contractor Thales was awarded an £18 million contract to deliver a prototype version of the technology.
The scheme has sparked debate over fears it may leave UK citizens open to identity fraud, should their biometric details fall into the wrong hands.
But the government appears keen to press on with plans to issue airport workers and immigrants with the first batch of cards after Thales succeeded in a pitch-off with CSC, Fujitsu, IBM and EDS to earn the first slice of what could be a very lucrative procurement pie.
The London School of Economics estimates the total cost will be around £20 billion and some have criticised it as an unnecessary expense.
The first to be issued with cards will also be among the first to be added to the National Identity Register and the initial test roll-out could occur as early as 2009.
