ICO takes action over data loss
Jun 10 2010, 11:30 AM
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has taken action after the details of 8,000 people were lost after an unencrypted memory stick went missing.
Lampeter Medical Practice has agreed to take remedial steps to ensure that a security breach does not take place again.
The incident occurred after an employee downloaded a database containing patient details to a USB stick and posted it to the Health Boards Business Service Centre. However, the memory stick did not reach its intended destination.
ICO Enforcement Group Manager Sally-Anne Poole said it was an unnecessary risk to have transferred so much data.
"It is imperative that staff are made fully aware of an organisation's policy for securing personal data and any portable device containing personal information should always be encrypted," she added.
The ICO revealed last month that it has now received in excess of 1,000 reports of data breaches, with the majority happening as a result of human or technical error.
