Christmas is a huge logistical operation for the Royal Mail. It is the time of year when its mail sorting solutions are stretched to the limit, with a predicted two billion items passing through the system.

The busiest day, predicted to be Monday 12th December, will see 130 million items been handled. Staffing for the occasion will see an extra 18,000 temporary workers being employed who will support the companies 130,000 postmen and women.

Royal Mail's Alan Gearns spoke to the BBC about the importance of postcodes in the festive period. The Royal Mail uses data systems that allow any items with a postcode to be kept within the machinery.

There has been significant investment into the festive task this year, with a dedicated packet network been set up as part of a £15 million investment. Nine packet hubs are being set up to sort a significant proportion of the packets Royal Mail handles before they are distributed around the UK and delivered to the door by postmen and women.

Once on the road, around 38,000 trucks and vans will be used to collect and distribute the Christmas mailbag. Additionally, 64 flights operate daily between England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The important days to remember this year, are Tuesday 20th for 1st class items, Saturday 17th for 2nd class and Thursday 22nd for special delivery items.ADNFCR-794-ID-801239221-ADNFCR
