Data quality needs to be improved consistently in the general practice (GP) healthcare sector, according to the British Medical Association (BMA).

In its 'Fit for the future - the evolution of general practice' report, the organisation pointed out that this segment has higher levels of computer usage than any other part of the NHS and called for a national strategy to be put in place to enhance the resultant benefits and address problems.

"There will need to be continual improvement in data quality in general practice and progression towards a paperless practice, all of which will require continued focus on confidentiality and safeguarding privacy," the executive summary said.

The BMA, which is associated with more than two-thirds of practising doctors in the UK, made 50 recommendations in the report, five of which focused on IT. These included the suggestion that financial incentives should be offered to help with a move towards superior data quality.
