The Department of Health has announced that it is to launch a new online data strategy designed to improve information access for the benefit of the single citizen view.

Website NHS Choices will soon hold data detailing the rating of clinics against a series of performance indicators.

The data is designed to be used by the NHS to improve best practice in healthcare by enabling practitioners to compare and analyse their work, as well as helping patients to make informed choices.

Former Health Minister Lord Darzi commented: "I have seen the value of having reliable data which allows clinical teams to assess the quality of the service they provide and to constantly challenge themselves to improve.

"I would encourage all clinicians to visit this site and to begin to use the data to drive up the quality of the services they provide.

"Some of the data for the indicators... is already available to the public on the NHS Choices website."

He added that the Department of Health would make the rest of the data available over the next 12 months.

It was recently announced by the government that further investment in public sector medical technologies has been proposed by the Office for Life Sciences.
