Google told to continue data management improvements

Data Management

Data management improvements may be one of the factors that internet giant Google needs to continue to keep in mind in order to keep the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) happy.

The ICO called on the company to make a number of improvements after it was discovered last year that some personal information had accidentally been collected by its Street View cars when wireless networks were not password protected.

It subsequently agreed to delete the data and make a number of changes and an audit has now revealed that some positive steps have taken place.

Christopher Graham, Information Commissioner, said: "I'm satisfied that Google has made good progress in improving its privacy procedures following the undertaking they signed with me last year.

"All of the commitments they gave us have been progressed and the company have also accepted the findings of our audit report where we've asked them to go even further."

He added that despite the changes the ICO expects Google to continue to keep up to date with the latest technological developments and change its practices where necessary.

In a July audit at the organisation's London offices, the watchdog found that the search engine has introduced measures such as training for employees relating to best practice concerning consumer data and an internal privacy structure.

The ICO offers audits on request and states it provides businesses with the chance to discuss data issues and - if necessary - draw up procedures that will enable the company to make improvements.

Retailer Lush was recently told to make sure customer details were kept secure after records relating to 5,000 shoppers were placed at risk between October 2010 and January 2011.

The hack led to a number of customer details being used fraudulently, something that may have caused damage to the company's reputation and could prompt others to take action.  ADNFCR-794-ID-800703823-ADNFCR
