FSA warning 'could help people improve security habits'

The Financial Services Authority's (FSA's) plan to contact people at risk of fraud could prompt individuals to change their security habits.

This is according to Simon Heron, internet security analyst for Network Box, who said he is interested to see whether those who are contacted benefit and alter their ways.

"I think if I was on this list and was contacted to a large extent I would be grateful to know that obviously my habits were bad and as a warning that any telephone call or email I receive needs to be treated with a greater deal of scepticism," he commented.

The most basic thing people can do to protect themselves is to avoid giving away too much information, Mr Heron stated.

People should realise that their data is valuable to criminals and that providing it freely could put them at risk of identity theft.

The FSA is set to write to 38,000 people who are particularly susceptible to this type of crime.
