EU 'approves data breach notification rule for telecoms firms'
Nov 5 2009, 11:36 AM
The European Commission has approved a new data breach notification amendment that will see telecommunications companies forced to inform customers if they lose their data, it has been reported.
According to out-law.com, the ruling does not cover businesses outside of the sector, despite the European Parliament calling for the notification requirement to be extended to online banks and other companies that provide services over the internet.
"It was backed in its call by the Article 29 Working Party, which is a committee formed by all of Europe's national data protection watchdogs," the news provider noted.
In related news, Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust signed an agreement last week to improve its data management practices following the loss of encrypted storage devices containing patient details.
The trust's chief executive Andrew Liles told the Information Commissioner's Office that staff will receive more training and be better briefed on the hospital's data policies.
