EC announces draft mandate on data sharing with US
Jun 1 2010, 12:42 PM
The European Commission has adopted a draft mandate to begin discussions about data sharing with US authorities, it has been reported.
According to zdnet.co.uk, it must be given the green light by the European Council before negotiations begin.
Announcing the draft mandate, Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, said there will be no data sharing without adequate protection.
"Our fundamental rights have to be respected at all times. I want to make sure any agreement with the United States has a high level of protection," she commented.
As part of the deal, EU citizens would have the right to access data relating to them and apply to have any inaccuracies changed, the website stated.
The European Commission last year announced a package of measures directed at providing law enforcement bodies with access to the Eurodac database for the purpose of fighting serious crimes such as drug and people trafficking.
