DVLA database forms part of new data strategy
Dec 3 2008, 09:52 AM
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) database is forming part of a new data strategy enabling employers to check the licence status of prospective and even existing employees.
Utilising a new form of software called Licence Link, which taps into the DVLA database, employers can check whether employees have any points or penalties on their licence.
The software also makes it possible for any penalties acquired after an initial check to be flagged up.
Neville Briggs is managing director of CFC solutions which developed Licence Link, he commented: "Recent changes in fleet risk management, especially the arrival of the Corporate Manslaughter Act, have made the checking of licences an essential task for fleet managers but it remains one that is onerous and difficult to manage, especially using a paper based system or spreadsheet."
He added that the data strategy would ensure best practice is maintained among businesses that use drivers, as the system will bring to the attention of employers any staff members who have infringed driving laws.
The DVLA is responsible for road safety and managing the database of registered drivers. It is an executive agency of the Department for Transport.
