DoH 'suspends online summary care record plans'
Apr 19 2010, 12:58 PM
While over 1.25 million patients' details have already gone the new NHS summary care database, the Department of Health has decided to stop its accelerated development.
In a statement released by Connecting for Health about the sudden move to stop the development of the summary care database, the DoH confirmed that the public will be sent information leaflets including information on how to opt out of the scheme.
The summary care record is intended to allow all patients' records to be accessible to GPs and other medical professionals across the UK to improve patient safety and treatment.
Moves to suspend the summary care database production at this time follows criticism from the British Medical Association (BMA) who believed the steps to launch the scheme had been "too hasty" but agreed that a creation of such a database had the "potential to improve healthcare for patients if implemented correctly."
Known as the SCR, the summary care record, will include information concerning a patient's allergies and current prescriptions. The DoH hope to, in consultation with patients, add to the data held for each patient.
